Preventive maintenance is work done on a schedule rather than after a breakdown: filters changed, systems checked, parts replaced before they fail. It is cheaper for the customer than an emergency call-out, and steadier work for the business.

For example: a split system is cleaned, checked and its filter replaced every six months, instead of waiting until it stops cooling on the hottest day of the year.
