Why this number matters
Travel is the cost most often left out of a quote, because it happens before the job starts and nobody logs it. Costed per job it looks trivial, a few dollars, not worth arguing about. Costed per year across every job every technician drives to, it is usually enough to pay for a vehicle. The number is also the honest basis for a call-out fee, and for deciding how far outside your area it is actually worth travelling.
How it is worked out
- Travel cost per job = kilometres per job × cost per kilometre
- Per week = cost per job × jobs per week; per year = per week × working weeks
