VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
The unique 17-character code that identifies a specific vehicle.

A VIN is the unique identifier stamped on a vehicle, normally 17 characters. Unlike a number plate it never changes, so it is the reliable way to know exactly which vehicle, and which parts fit it.
For example: two cars of the same model and year can take different brake pads. The VIN identifies the exact build, so the workshop orders the part that fits. It is 17 characters long, printed on the driver’s side of the dashboard where it shows through the windscreen and on the door frame, and recording it on the job card keeps the car’s history together even after the plates change.
