Why this number matters

Utilisation is the number that explains why a busy business is not a profitable one. Ten points of utilisation is usually worth more than a price rise, and it costs nothing to collect: it is the difference between the hours you pay for and the hours you bill.

How it is worked out

  • Utilisation = billable hours ÷ paid hours
  • Hours short of target = (target utilisation × paid hours) − billable hours
  • Revenue those hours are worth = hours short × charge-out rate (× 46 working weeks for a year)
