An informed guess at what work will cost, before the full scope is known.

An estimate gives the customer an idea of cost when the full scope is not yet known, before a leak is traced or a fault is diagnosed. It is not a fixed price. Many businesses follow an estimate with a quote once they know exactly what is needed.

For example: over the phone, a plumber says a blocked drain is usually two to three hundred dollars, depending on the cause. After a camera inspection the cause is known, and the customer gets a fixed quote for the repair.
