Your business name and contact details, the customer’s name, an invoice number that is unique and in sequence, the date, what you did or supplied with a price for each line, the tax, the total and when payment is due. Add how to pay: bank details, or a payment link.
In Australia, a GST-registered business must give a tax invoice for a sale over A$82.50 (including GST) when the customer asks for one; it shows that it is a tax invoice, your name and ABN, the date, what was sold, the GST and whether the price includes it. In New Zealand, invoices now carry "taxable supply information": over NZ$200 your GST number must appear, and over NZ$1,000 the buyer’s details too. Choosing AUD or NZD titles the document “Tax invoice” and prints GST per line; add your ABN or GST number under your business details.
A VAT-registered business must show its VAT registration number, a unique invoice number, the date, the customer’s name and address, a description of each item, the VAT rate and the VAT charged. Put your VAT number under your business details, and choose GBP so the rate defaults to 20%.
Send the invoice the day the work is done, give a clear due date rather than “on receipt”, and make paying easy: bank details on the invoice, and the invoice number as the payment reference so the money is easy to match.
