What this assumes
- Labour is costed at your loaded cost, not the wage.
Why this number matters
Most jobs that lose money look fine on the quote. The loss arrives in the hours nobody logged and the second trip for a part. Costing a finished job honestly (including travel and the materials that were used rather than the ones that were quoted) is the only way to find out which kinds of work are worth taking more of.
How it is worked out
- Labour cost = (hours on site + travel hours) × loaded labour cost per hour
- Total cost = labour cost + materials + other costs
- Profit = amount charged − total cost
- Margin = profit ÷ amount charged
- Profit per hour = profit ÷ (hours on site + travel hours)
